The salary increase result for universities partially secures purchasing power

The collective bargaining parties have approved the general collective agreement for universities. The collective agreement will enter into force on April 1, 2023, and will continue in force until March 31, 2025. The new collective agreement contains a salary increase result, but no changes were made to the other content.

“There is a broad consensus in society on the importance of research, education, development, and innovation activities. The role of universities in these activities is central, and it is good that university personnel were finally given a fair salary increase that would preserve purchasing power”, emphasizes Jukka Heikkilä, Chair of the Finnish Union of University Professors.

“However, in the future, it will be necessary to take care of the salary level of university personnel and the competitiveness of universities as an employer”, he continues.

According to the new collective agreement, full-time employees will pe paid, in connection to the payment of salaries in May, as a one-time instalment, 12.6% of their monthly salary in March 2023. However, the amount will be at least 400 euro. There will be a general increase as of September 1, 2023, by 3.5%, and as of March 1, 2024, by 2.0%. The amount of the local instalment, as of December 1, 2024, is 0.5%
